    Asbestos Surveys in Manchester

At Pillars Environmental, we specialise in two kinds of asbestos surveys:

The Refurbishment and Demolition Asbestos Survey (R&D Asbestos Survey) is required for properties which were built before 2000, where refurbishment works are due to take place.  The R&D survey is undertaken with visual and intrusive techniques. Therefore, we require access to all areas of the site which might contain asbestos.

An Asbestos Management survey is far less invasive. Instead of gaining full access, we would instead remove and replace ceiling tiles for example, as the building is likely to remain occupied throughout the survey. Where access is available, the materials will be tested and if access is difficult to obtain, we would presume asbestos is present. If the material is found to have asbestos then we would also assume other similar materials would also contain asbestos.

    Asbestos Management Plans in Manchester

An asbestos management plan would detail how you intend to manage any asbestos in your Manchester building. It sets out the process that would need to be undertaken to ensure that any who enters the building will remain protected against asbestos. The Pillars Environmental asbestos management plans create a history of any asbestos materials found and labels the course of action taken. This could include: monitoring and reviewing, undertaking remedial works or removal.

Our asbestos management plans also provide the tools you need to manage the risk of asbestos and allows you to fulfil your legal obligations.

    Asbestos Removal Management in Manchester

Asbestos removal can be a complex and expansive job. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) states for the majority of asbestos removal works being undertaken, a licensed contractor is required. Our team of asbestos professionals can arrange and oversee the removal of any asbestos in your Manchester property, in compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations. Our asbestos management services are also fully comprehensive. This means that we can manage and oversee the job from start to finish. This includes preparing the specifications and managing the tendering process, performing regular site audits, providing continuous feedback to you and analysing documents provided by the removal contractor to ensure all information is correct and nothing is left outstanding.

    Asbestos in Manchester

The North Western English city of Manchester is known for its famous architecture, rich football and music culture, media links, scientific/engineering output and transport connections.

The world’s first industrial city, Manchester has a deep industrial heritage dating all the way back to the early 19th century – when the Industrial Revolution (1740-1860) drove its rapid growth, starting with the cotton industry.

As Manchester’s cotton industry grew, so did the city itself. Soon enough, towering mills, bustling warehouses and crowded streets burst into frutition, putting the city at the heart of new international networks engaging in manufacturing and trade.

But, with industrial growth came new materials. One of these materials was asbestos. Asbestos was widely used across Manchester in many sectors throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly to lag heated pipes and boilers. Specifically, many factories across the area were known to have asbestos lagging surrounding the premises. Large amounts of raw asbestos fibre were also transported via the Manchester Ship Canal and offloaded at Salford Docks.

Demographics Susceptible to Asbestos Exposure in Manchester

Approximately 75,000 people worked in factories across Manchester during the Industrial Revolution. Additionally, over the course of its operation, Salford Docks (now known as Salford Quays) employed up to 5,000 people until its closure in 1982. Hence, factory workers and dockyard workers were among some of the most susceptible demographics to asbestos exposure and the development of asbestos-related illnesses in Manchester before the material was banned in the UK in 1999.

Other susceptible demographics in Manchester included, but were not limited to:

    • Textile Manufacturers
    • Cotton Manufacturers
    • Pipe/Boiler Laggers
    • Engineers
    • Shipwrights
    • Joiners & Carpenters
    • Boilermakers
    • Welders
    • Plumbers
    • Electricians

    Asbestos Claims In Manchester

    Asbestos Claims in Manchester

One example of a Manchester asbestos claim is a North West case against a construction firm for a joiner, named George, that truly highlights the serious effects asbestos can have on a person’s health. George worked on the construction of flats in Atherton, near Bolton. During the 1970s, he boxed in soil pipes using asbestos sheets while constructing bathrooms for these flats. These sheets were dusty and easy to break, with the dust often covering George’s clothes and hands.

Asbestos-related diseases can take decades to develop in your system, which is why it wasn’t until December 2018 that George began to feel breathless. A year later, in 2019, his GP sent him for an x-ray. Shortly after, he was sent to hospital for ten days, where he was diagnosed with a type of asbestos-related cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, mesothelioma. George did eventually manage to reach a six-figure settlement.
