Safe Asbestos Services For Retail Properties

Whether you manage an independent retail store, or an extensive portfolio of retail properties across the country, it is essential you are aware of the asbestos risk if your leisure facility was built before the banning of asbestos in 1999. Categorised as a non-domestic premises which is visited by the public, the Dutyholder of the building where your retail property is located is legally required to “take reasonable steps to find out if there are materials containing asbestos in non-domestic premises, and if so, its amount, where it is and what condition it is in” according to the Health and Safety Executive.

Having the correct asbestos survey undertaken for your public sector building to fully determine your asbestos risk is of utmost importance. Therefore, if the Dutyholder fails to deliver on their responsibility to managing any potential asbestos compliantly, then steep fines or even imprisonment could be enacted as a result.

Pillars Environmental are licensed asbestos consultants who have decades of experience working across both the commercial and domestic aspects of asbestos inspection. We conduct three types of asbestos surveys for retail stores, including: Asbestos Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys (R&D), Asbestos Management Surveys (AMS) and Asbestos Re-Inspections.

Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys For Retail

Formally called Type 3 asbestos surveys, Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys are conducted when significant works are scheduled to take place within your retail building, and any asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) present are likely to be broken or disturbed. Also referred to as an R&D survey, this could include either full or partial demolition and refurbishment works to your retail facility.

When compared with Asbestos Management Surveys, R&D surveys are a more intrusive method of inspecting the ACMs within your retail shop. If this asbestos survey is the most appropriate for your retail store, it is essential that the premises be vacated whilst the survey is being conducted. Our licensed asbestos surveyors will extract samples of any suspected ACMs in your retail store according to the guidance set out by the HSG264 Asbestos: The Survey Guide. We will then forward the suspected ACMs on to a UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredited lab for asbestos testing. Once the tests have been run, it will then be determined whether the asbestos samples extracted from your premises are asbestos-containing.

"The duty to manage covers all non-domestic premises. Such premises include all industrial, commercial or public buildings such as factories, warehouses, education, shops, hospitals and schools."

     Asbestos Management Surveys For Retail

Asbestos Management Surveys for shops use far less invasive methods of determining the asbestos threat to those who work in or visit your retail store. Formally known as a Type 2 asbestos survey, an AMS could be a more suitable option within the retail environment due to its more discreet fashion.

While the methods of asbestos sampling can vary depending on the requirements, the processing methods remain the same. At Pillars Environmental, we work alongside the most reliable UKAS-accredited labs to both process, and inspect the samples extracted from your retail store. Our licensed asbestos contractors can then help you to manage any ACMs through an Asbestos Management Plan or other asbestos removal management services.

    Retail Asbestos Re-Inspection Surveys

We can also offer you an asbestos re-inspection service if the ACMs in your shop need regular checks. Providing the ACMs have remained in good condition, we may advise they remain in situ, but are frequently inspected by an asbestos re-inspection service provider like ourselves. As a result, we are ensuring the ACMs are aligned with important health and safety legislation surrounding asbestos, and for your own peace of mind.

Asbestos re-inspections are commonly recommended as a course of action in an Asbestos Management Plan, if the ACMs remain in situ. The management plan will denote how to most appropriately manage them within your store, and include re-inspection surveys to ensure the conditions of ACMs have not deteriorated since last checked.
