Why Salford?
Salford wasn’t always the booming media city we recognise it as today. It was once a small market town, specialising in the trade of woollen goods and fustians.
But after the Industrial Revolution came along, its population grew from less than 30,000 in 1801 to over 256,000 by 1891. Textiles remained a strong suit for the area, becoming the main source of employment in the borough (Salford gained municipal borough status in 1844).
However, with textile manufacturing came plenty of cotton mills, particularly those along the river in Pendleton and Ordsall, as well as factories – the first of which was Philips and Lee Twist Mill, built between Chapel Street and the River Irwell in 1801.
