Professional and Reliable Asbestos Surveys in Liverpool
Since 2016, our dedicated team have been helping building dutyholders to identify and assess the asbestos risk within their Liverpool premises.
As a building dutyholder, including building owners, managers or landlords, it is your legal duty to assess the asbestos risk level within your premises. This is a difficult task to complete, and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that those who carry out the risk assessment must have a good level of “knowledge, training and expertise”. The Pillars Environmental team are experts in the field and can offer professional asbestos surveys across Liverpool. We pride ourselves on always being reliable, efficient and up to date with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation.
Asbestos Surveys in Liverpool
We specialise in carrying out two kinds of asbestos surveys:
The Refurbishment and Demolition Asbestos Survey (R&D Asbestos Survey) is a requirement for all buildings built pre-2000 where refurbishments or demolitions are due to take place. This is because refurbishments could damage any asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and therefore these must be located before work can begin. The R&D surveys require more intrusive techniques and therefore the building/ the renovation area for testing must be evaluated before the survey can take place.
An Asbestos Management survey is far less invasive and therefore can remain occupied whilst the survey is undertaken. Where access is available, we can sample the suspected ACM and send these for testing in an independent laboratory. If for any reason we cannot gain access to an area of the building, it would be assumed that asbestos is present. If the material is found to have asbestos all other similar materials will be presumed to be containing asbestos too.
Asbestos Management Plans in Liverpool
An asbestos management plan details how a dutyholder intends to manage the risk of asbestos found within the building. It clearly lays out the stages that must be completed to ensure a safe environment for anyone who may enter the building at any time. A person will be assigned to each stage, what exactly is involved and what training might be required to complete these successfully. These are to ensure that those who may enter the building will remain protected against asbestos.
A Pillars Environmental asbestos management plan creates a document of asbestos-containing materials found within your property and defines the course of action required. This can include monitor and review, undertake remedial works or remove.
Your bespoke asbestos management plan will give you the tools to manage the risk of asbestos and allows you to fulfil your legal obligations in managing the asbestos risks.
Asbestos Removal Management in Liverpool
The removal of asbestos is a complex and intricate process. This is why the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recommends a licensed contractor must undertake the asbestos removal for all but the most straightforward of jobs. However, finding a removal contractor which is knowledgeable and professional can be a daunting task. Once you have hired a contractor, how do you know they have carried out their duties in full and in line with sufficient health and safety legislation? Our team can arrange and oversee the removal of any asbestos in your Liverpool property, in compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations. All our asbestos management services are fully comprehensive and include:
- Preparing the specifications,
- Managing the tendering process,
- Performing regular site audits whilst work is ongoing,
- Providing continuous feedback,
- Inspect documents provided by the removal contractor to ensure all information is correct and nothing is left outstanding.
Asbestos in Liverpool
With over 2,500 listed buildings, Liverpool’s streets are full of history. Home to the famous Royal Albert Docks, the Royal Liver Building, the Philharmonic Hall and many more, Liverpool showcases the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the UK.
But, with many of these buildings being constructed in the early 1900s (before the final ban on asbestos in the UK), the use of asbestos was prominent.
Asbestos in Liverpool would arrive via the docks and was most often found within the asbestos lagging surrounding factories.
Liverpool’s construction industry made use of asbestos products for roofs, soffits and fasicas on houses. This was due to its useful heat-insulating qualities, which meant that it was also widely used to lag heated pipes and boilers.
Asbestos Claims in Liverpool
Liverpool has a deep history with the shipbuilding, dock work and factory work industries. Consequently, those who worked in these sectors (particularly across Birkenhead and the Wirral) have a high rate of developing mesothelioma – an asbestos-related cancer that affects the lining of the lungs.
The Merseyside Asbestos Victim Support Group (MAVSG) have estimated that the number of people who were exposed to asbestos at work in Liverpool could be as high as 1 in 8 workers.
Despite these workers being exposed to asbestos across the 1960s, 70s and 80s, it is only now that symptoms of mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer are beginning to show since these diseases take decades to develop in your system.
Since 1981, approximately 1,200 people in the Liverpool, Merseyside and North West area have died due to mesothelioma.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012), the dutyholder of a building is legally obliged to manage any asbestos-containing materials within their premises.
How long does an asbestos survey in Liverpool take?
No two projects are the same. How long an asbestos survey takes depends on the type of survey needed, the age of the building, the size of the building, etc. If your building is an older construction, it may require a more time-consuming and invasive method, such as a Refurbishment & Demolition Survey, in order to thoroughly assess the potential presence of any ACMs. Whereas, if your building is slightly newer, it may require an Asbestos Management Survey which takes on a less invasive and slightly faster approach.
