Efficient and Reliable Asbestos Surveys and Management Plans in Blackpool

Since 2016, our dedicated team have been helping building owners and managers to identify and assess the asbestos risk within their Blackpool premises.

UK law states that it is the duty of the building owners and managers to fully assess their building for any asbestos that may be present. This is a difficult task to complete, but that is where we can help! The Pillars Environmental team provides asbestos services in Blackpool and the surrounding areas, to offer support and peace of mind to owners and managers.  We have the extensive knowledge and understanding needed to provide a tailored asbestos solution for your unique situation. We pride ourselves on always being reliable, efficient and up to date with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation.

    Asbestos Surveys in Blackpool

At Pillars Environmental, we carry out two main types of asbestos surveys:

The Refurbishment and Demolition Asbestos Survey (R&D Asbestos Survey) is required for any property that was built before 2000, where refurbishment works are due to take place. The R&D survey is undertaken with visual and intrusive techniques. Therefore, we require full access to all areas of the building which might contain asbestos.

An Asbestos Management survey is far less invasive. Instead of needing full access, we would instead just remove and replace ceiling tiles, as the building is likely to remain occupied throughout the survey. Where access is available, the materials will be tested. If for any reason we cannot gain access to an area of the building, it would be assumed that asbestos is present. If material is found to have asbestos all other similar materials will be presumed to be containing asbestos too.

    Asbestos Management Plans in Blackpool

An asbestos management plan describes in detail how you intend to manage and contain any asbestos found within your building. It sets out the stages that will be undertaken to manage the asbestos status, who is in charge of handling each stage and any training required to complete the tasks fully. These are to ensure that those who may enter the building will remain protected against asbestos.

Our asbestos management plans can create a record of any asbestos-containing materials in your Blackpool property and define the appropriate course of action needed. This can include monitor and review, undertake remedial works or remove.

Your bespoke asbestos management plan will give you the tools to manage the risk of asbestos and allows you to fulfil your legal obligations in managing the asbestos risks.

    Asbestos Removal Management in Blackpool

Asbestos removal is a complex and expensive job, which is why the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) states for the majority of asbestos removal work, a licensed contractor is required. Our team can arrange and oversee the removal of any asbestos in your Blackpool property, in compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations. All our asbestos management services are fully comprehensive. This means we can handle the job from start to finish, including:

    • Preparing the specifications,
    • Managing the tendering process,
    • Performing regular site audits whilst work is ongoing,
    • Providing continuous feedback,
    • Inspect documents provided by the removal contractor to ensure all information is correct and nothing is left outstanding.

    Asbestos in Blackpool

Located on the Irish sea coast of England, Blackpool is a seaside resort in Lancashire. Some of the most well-known attractions in Blackpool include Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blackpool Tower and Blackpool Illuminations – an annual light show held along the Promenade. Built in 1894, the landmark Blackpool Tower houses a circus, a glass viewing platform and the infamous Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

However, with older structures comes a higher risk of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) being present. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), if your property was constructed before the year 2000, asbestos could remain present within the fabric of the building.

Asbestos was widely used across the construction industry due to its heat-insulating properties, which made it a useful material for lagging heated pipes and boilers. Hence, it can still be found in many homes and businesses today. A fact that unfortunately Blackpool is all too familiar with.

    Asbestos Cases in Blackpool

In June of 2020, the owners of one of the three piers in Blackpool were sentenced over refurbishing an asbestos-lined arcade while open to the public. This posed a high risk of exposing approximately 600 workers and members of the public to airborne asbestos fibres.

Untrained and ill-equipped contractors were hired to remove asbestos from an arcade-style roof at the premises. It was later suspected that an industrial skip had been used to dispose of the asbestos waste and ACMs were found in a nearby car park area open to the public.

This case ultimately cost the owners £140,000 and a loss of six weeks of trading.

This is why only fully trained asbestos contractors should undertake any asbestos management works at your premises.

Is an asbestos survey required by law in Blackpool?

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012), the dutyholder of a building is legally obliged to manage any asbestos-containing materials within their premises.

How long does an asbestos survey take in Blackpool?

No two projects are the same. How long an asbestos survey takes depends on the type of survey needed, the age of the building, the size of the building, etc.

If your building is an older construction, it may require a more time-consuming and invasive method, such as a Refurbishment & Demolition Survey, in order to thoroughly assess the potential presence of any ACMs. Whereas, if your building is slightly newer, it may require an Asbestos Management Survey which takes on a less invasive and slightly faster approach.
